Some of them just can't fucking do it anymore. The people who won't take in their mentally ill family members and friends aren't all assholes. Do they attempt to offer kindness and compassion to their family member, or do they choose to feel safe, comfortable, and happy in their own home? Meanwhile, the families of people like my brother are backed into a corner and have to make a decision. They can't take anymore patients, and some are even being closed down because there's simply no money to be made in helping the mentally ill. There's a distinct lack of resources for dealing with mentally ill people, and the existing hospitals are full. I know that he isn't the only person out there that is like this, and it really does sadden me that these people can't get the help they need. That's my brother, and the only thing that's keeping my parents from kicking him out is the outstanding fear they have of him doing something violent to another person - namely his grandparents. He sees us as animals, and it's fucking hard to give a shit about someone who refuses to accept help for himself and has a legal system that (understandably) prevents it from being forced upon him. When he leaves bruises and breaks skin, he can't be charged with battery because he's legally insane and has no intent. When he is violent, we can't record him because he has an legal expectation of privacy while he's home.
The only way he can be forced to accept help is if he happens to be violent around hospital staff or police, which is specifically who he's learned to mask his violence for as long as necessary because he can't be held if he isn't a threat to himself or others. If he has no will to do these things, they won't be done, and, as a result, he's effectively someone who cannot be helped. He can't be forced to take his medication, he can't be forced to see his therapists and psychiatrists, and he can't be forced to be taken care of by professionals. He has constant delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia.
He can go from being happy to being highly violent at the snap of a finger.
